My Story

I am an educator, advocate, practitioner, and speaker who bridges trauma-inform designed spaces, children’s places, and also birth environments with brain, neuroscientific and environmental psychological knowledge. I hold a PhD in Health from the University of Technology Sydney, where I penned “The Childbirth Supporter Study’: Video-ethnographic examination of the physical birth unit environment”. I am co-founder of both the Global Birth Environment Design Network (gbedn.org) and the Trauma-informed Design Society (traumainformeddesign.org).

My primary research and theoretical interests are systems theory, human potential, spatial justice, play and curiosity, attention restoration theory, resilience, salutogenic and therapeutic design, symbolic interactionism, and, of course, neuroscience – all seated within research-informed, evidence-based and culturally appropriate design. I am mom to a vibrant tween and also an urban-farm menagerie-wrangler.
